Or, “How I found out WordPress wasn’t sending emails anymore”
Recently (embarrassingly recently) I enabled 2FA on my Zoho email account. You can use BitWarden as an authenticator, which is very nifty. Since I have a version of BitWarden self-hosted, I used that.
However, I came to realise that WordPress wasn’t sending emails any more. I was still getting emails about there being a new post on my site — my own posts, very helpful — and so I checked the log that my plugin offers for just such an emergency:
Initially puzzling, but I put two and two together and figured out who to blame for this problem (me), and what to do about it.
Zoho lets you generate App Specific Passwords, which is a nifty security feature. I did that, which sorted emails not getting sent.
Post SMTP complains ‘Sorry, you are not allowed to access this page.’
As a side note, when I tried to check on emails from the dashboard widget, I was greeted with:
News to me, buddy! I’m not sure exactly what caused this, the answer may be in my webserver logs. In any case, going to the settings page via the side menu on the admin screen worked okay; and either that or an update seemed to sort getting there from the dashboard widget.
