PC Shooters you MUST play sometime.

Here is the list of games that must be played, start to end. I will include only Single Player based games, multiplayer can come later :P.

  1. Half Life 2 – Probably one of the best overall experiences you can get from your PC. A solid storyline is backed up by good graphics, the occasional piece of atmospheric music and challenging AI.
  2. F.E.A.R. – One of the scariest games I have played, mainly due to the very creepy little girl, and has a solid story to keep you guessing till the end (and what an end). Also got some of the best graphics you will be able to find in current games (in slow-mo looks even BETTER!)
  3. Far Cry – Although quite an old game (relatively) it still supports some of the largest and most detailed maps ever found in a game. Loading screens are few and far between. This dense environment supports eaither stealth or “run in guns blazing” approachs, although a mix of the two usually works best. Add together some tough AI and an interesting story, and you got yourself a fine game.
  4. Call of Duty 2 (plus original+expansion) – If you like WWII shooters, you can’t get much better than this. It really makes you feel like you are fighting an an army, and not solo, like most shooters do. The graphics are top notch and the sound effects really makes this game exciting (especially with surround sound). The varied campaign as playing as British, US or Russian forces lets you say all sides and keeps you itnerested in the people involved.
  5. Darwinia – This is one of the most innovative, absorbing and emotional games I have seen in a while, and although not a shooter, it doesn’t  really fall into any genre. Seeing the little Darwinians mourn the dead, and jump for joy at victory, makes you really feel for them by the end. And yes, the graphics are meant to look like that! (They DO live insde a completely digital world…)

I only have the 5 games at the moment, mainly because I am very picky. More will eventually come as I think of them, and feel free to give your ideas in the comments section.

“The gaming world was turned on it's head today, as…”

“…I got a new joystick and keyboard.”

Yes folks, though it may not sound like much, I have in fact got a couple of decent preipherals. I got the Saitek Evo [bigger pic], which looks and feels cool-yet-menacing. And the keyboard, well, let me just warn you now… it’s fairly generic. But it works! So at least it has an advantage over my last one…

So, gamers beware, I now have a working keyboard! No more right arrow key not responding unless I thump it! No more keypad 0 getting stuck! No more delete deleting entire lines rather than just characters! Beware!

And pilots beware too… well, I already had a joystick, but beware! My new one has more buttons! And a wee light on the top! And some light buttons! Beware!

XBOX 360 Fairly Recent Launch

Since the XBOX 360 recently launched, I thought I’d remind people of a comparison done between it and the Dreamcast:

Dreamcast 2.0 from 1UP.com

It concludes that the XB360 will succeed where the DC failed, partly because of the massive resources of Microsoft, and partly thanks to the support of the game makers. However, with technical problems (got heat?) and the PS3 launching soon with an impressive spec, one wonders if this will be a very close race. Enjoy it!

Two More states considering game laws

From 2 states consider game laws.

Well, gee, I know this may sound obvious to some… but perhaps it isn’t games that make children violent? Now, I don’t want to go off an a rant here, but…

Maybe it’s being raised in near-poverty by a single mother, or by parents that just “don’t know how” or don’t see discipline as being necessary. Perhaps it is living in a conflicted culture that glorifies violence from some, and villifies it from others.

“Violence is another of those things that isn’t bad when it happens to other people.”

Perhaps maybe instead of ignoring, nay, denying these people and these problems exist, maybe there could be progress made in solving them. Heck, acknowledging the problem could be solved would be a big step in the right direction.

Maybe one day we could get a consitutional amendment and the start of some gun control, so that any nut can’t just walk into a Wal-Mart and get “tooled up wit’ some nines”. And get rid of assault weapons. Civilians just don’t need them. Defense? When was the last time you saw on the news:

A revolver (Single Action Army, anyone) or a shotgun is more than enough to cover the spirit of the 2nd amendmend. Heck, even a revolver is probably overkill, but again a step in the right direction.

Now, don’t get me wrong — I don’t think these games should be played by just anyone. I feel uneasy seeing my 9-year-old nephew playing San Andreas, but that is without cause. Why? Because he knows it is a game. Smart guy. People don’t just suddenly think “Hey, lets go boost some cars cause of that game!”. No.

They are smarter (somewhat, since they’re still dumb enough to imitate a game) than that. They know that their actions will be reported by the sensationalist press as something along the lines of:

So if you disagree with what I’m saying… hire a couple of teenagers to go on a CJ-style rampage and get them to say they were “just copying GTA”.

Of course that’s just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Incipient (and inane) BF2 Awards

I have 3 badges that I’ve qualified for but need to get: Veteran knife, Veteran engineer, and Basic/Veteran Explosives Ordinance. Vet knife is probably the easiest out of those three.

I need to play a wee bit more to qualify for the next few:

1) Distingushed Service Ribbon [command time]
2) Legion of Merit Ribbon [about 15h play time]
3) Vet anti-tank [3 1/2 h]
4) Vet sniper [many h]

Those would all be good to get. I just need to forget I have exams next week so that I can play guilt-free!
