I’ve been playing a little Battlefield 2142 recently. Because I notice little things, I missed the weapon highlighting that I was used to in Battlefield 2. In trying to rectify this, I found that it’s actually quite tricky to find out how to do this. Most searches include posts about the BF2 version, with 2142 in the text as they by happenstance have a 2142 forum whether the HOWTO was posted.
So! Here’s what to edit and what to change.
- Go to the 2142 install directory, then navigate to the mods folder, then bf2142, then finally the Localization folder.
eg for me it is
D:\Games\2142\mods\bf2142\Localization – just substitute C:\Program Files\ or whereever.
- IMPORTANT: Back up the file “strings.csv” in this directory. Copy it somewhere safe. Actually do this step – not having backups SUCKS. Trust me, I know.
- The highlighting code is |C1001. So, open strings.csv in Excel or OO.o Calc or notepad and search for the line:
HUD_HUD_KILLEDBY_KILLS. The first entry is the English version. Change it from
§0#PLAYERNAME1# [§1#WEAPON#§0] #PLAYERNAME2#
§0#PLAYERNAME1# [|C1001#WEAPON#|C1001] #PLAYERNAME2#
- Save and close
- (optional: if things didn’t work, restore the backup and try again… you did back up, right?)
Similarly, if you want to know what someone was killed with for teamkills (I do), go to the
HUD_HUD_KILLEDBY_TEAMKILLS line, and change
§0#PLAYERNAME1# [§1Teamkills§0] #PLAYERNAME2#
§0#PLAYERNAME1# [|C1001Teamkills - #WEAPON#|C1001] #PLAYERNAME2#.
Voila! Highlighted, weapon’d teamkill notifications.
I haven’t tested it yet, but I think that other colours and size modifiers should work. Try codes used from BF2, replacing the hash (#) with a vertical pipe (|). Let me know if it works.
There has been rumours for a while now of new maps and game modes, ever since the EA Test server was spotted running some interesting looking things. It now appears that the two recently announced (but not really, these are the official statements, which were accidentally posted, the official word will likely come in the next few days) booster packs are behind the new content. Just to let you know I am now in possesion of my very own purchased-from-a-store spyware! After the install and quick patch which was avaliable pre-release, I started it up and quickly was able to stick in my EA details and got my ksyme99 username all ready to go! I even get a fancy 2 next to my name to show I was a “veteran” of battlefield 2…Best part of that is a free unlock and I had to choose the frag grenades – can’t be without them on the Titan! I have also binded my keys and set my audio settings so I don’t have to be deafened when using teamspeak. Unfortunately can’t actually play it yet, must eat and then got a life later on…but I will be sure to post my thoughts tomorrow when I get round to playing!
NOTE: The [HoG] clan tag is a long and pointless story – needless to say it is now more tradition than meaning anything, especially since no other [HoG] members are planning on getting this game at the moment…
This has been a hot topic as of late, with most people seeing this as another EA money scam, others as a blatent invasion of piracy and a few don’t see the big deal. I have come across an article which explains the motives behind the ads and what they actually collect.
UPDATE: The official word from EA has also been posted where they confirm what has already been said.

Kotaku is running a short piece on how EA seems to have decided to include spyware with BF 2142 for the purpose of showing in-game ads. GameJoint has news on the relationship between IGA and EA.
So. In the latest CGW podcast, they received retail boxed copies of BF 2142.
When you open the box, a big slip of paper falls out first, preceeding any discs or manuals. Continue reading “Battlefield 2142 to Include Spyware”
Since Kenny did a good review of 2142, I thought I would add my thoughts to the mix. Continue reading “Battlefield 2142 Review Deux”
Not been many posts on BF2 since…a while. Last one was about the 1.2 patch, and adding new weapons as I recall. Those days are far behind us. We now have 1.4 and the game to me is just as fun, if not more so, than when I first started playing over a year ago now. But now we have a new beast on the horizon, 2142… Continue reading “Battlefield 2142 Demo Review / Biased Opinions”
